It's like when sports fans cheer for an injury and the response is to call the whole fan base a classless bunch when in actuality it is only about 2%. That's my beef. This is pretty ridiculous though.
As a black female I find this "congress woman" very ignorant. The mere fact that some are not advanced as far as vocabulary goes is not the concern of others. We still need to speak proper English although certain others inexcusably cannot. Also those names are horrible. She shouldn't even want to associate black people with them.
Are these African-American (let's call them black from now on for simplicity's fucking sake) names or just hood-names? This really doesn't sound like traditional black, it sounds more like either a black name that whites twisted because they couldn't pronounce it, or a pet-name for a black person (like woeisha wtf lol). For example, I dare you to pronounce "Gene-Jay". My middle name. Chinese. I'm willing to bet that less than a tenth of you can properly pronounce it, so you'll say "Ching-Chay" (or some variation of that) instead.
While I think a broader diversity on names would be nice (not Chantaniqua or whatever, but just different names because she's right, they are mostly white, Christian type of names), I think speaking differently on the news to serve people (not black people, because that's a stereotype) that somehow can't understand is idiotic.
You guys know that the general population picks those names. You can submit names for hurricanes and I guess either no one submits ethnic sounding names or they don't get voted for. If you want more diverse names suggest them at the National Weather Service.
Andrea, Felix, Gabrielle, Humberto, Lorenzo, Omar, Marco, Gustav, Wanda, Igor, Jose, Katia, Maria, Philippe, Rina, Rafael, Oscar, Florence, Ernesto, Alberto..............Ya you're right, they DO use too many white christian names O.o
Funny, I didn't find Igor, Gustav, Ernesto, and several others you mentioned anywhere in the Christian Guide to Baby Names. Huh. Maybe I just missed them. Also, this lady is not just an idiot, but an embarrassment. We have way too many people in positions of power or considered an influential force on a particular community of people who are all over the radio waves, television, News reports, and internet that are loud, ignorant, spewing absolute nonsense and doing nothing to help the image that the rest of the world has of Americans. I wish we could show them that these extremists are small in number and do not represent the majority of the population. Unfortunately it's these "sensationalistic" type of people the that media LOVES to show the world, and this gives them a very distorted view of what life in America is actually like.
That was unexpected.
I look like a Mexican, drink like an Irishman and fight like a Scotsman.
