I love this post. Not simply because I see Pitbulls as adorable, but because the "gangster" pic was from a site called ROFLwigger.com. Which I'll be checking out shortly.
Before I was born, my parents got a pitbul puppy that was rescued from a dog fighting arena. Even after I was born, she was the most gentle and loving dog I had ever known. Not to long ago, she died from rumors. Those rumors were from the way the people treated her, trying to get her to fight.
I can't stand it when people make statements like this. How the dog acts is based on how they're raised. My uncle has a pit bull named Cocoa and she's one of the sweetest dogs you'll ever meet.
There's one good thing about people being afraid of pits: i have a lil blue pit. when she gets out the yard i worry BIG time bc she's deaf n has gotten ran over before bc she can't hear cars coming. both times she's gotten out and "taken herself for a walk", animal control has gotten called and picked her up bc my neighbors are quick to report a vicious pit on the loose. thank God for that otherwise my baby girl might have gotten run over again.
And let me tell u that she is so vicious that if someone broke into our house she would probably show ge burglar where we keep the good stuff as long as she got a belly rub.
One that was forgotten from this list: Pit Bulls aren't even a "breed" of dog. Pit Bull is an umbrella term for five different breeds. (or more depending on opinion)
Throw that at someone decrying the Pit Bull as a bad "breed." Ask them which one. If they are confused, they're full of shit.
Thank you for clarifying this. There is a breed called the American Pit Bull Terrier, but the term "pit bull" is given to any dog that is stocky, heavily muscled, broad chested, and square headed. So that means, APBTs, Staffordshire bull terriers, American Staffordshires, Cane Corso, American bulldogs, and many, MANY more breeds are deemed "pit bulls"
Awesome :) I had an American Bulldog named Magnus and he was literally the best dog ever. He would beat his tail against walls so hard when he got excited that the tip of his tail would bleed. That's how much he loved you!
As in a dogo? those things are fierce <3 My dad has two and they killed a deer one time on our property and then they drug it up to the house as an offering
I have an issue with this post. Don't get me wrong, I am a major pit bull advocate, but this post is too biased for me to agree with it. While some things are true, some other "facts" here are actually "myths." For example:
Temperament and DNA-
-Loyalty and kindness are bred into dogs DNA. The original breeders of Labradors, for example, of course wanted their dogs to be the best retrievers and best hunting companions. However, they also wanted a dog that would be a good family pet. So not only would they breed the best working dog, but they would breed the friendliest.
-fighting pit bulls are bred to be vicious toward other animals, but EXTREMLY friendly and loyal toward their families. Dog fighters want a dog who will kill an opponent, but won't turn on their handler if the fight needs to be broken up. So fighting pit bulls are bred for their hostility toward other animals, but are some of the most trustworthy dogs when it comes to people.
Continuing:
The way that a pit bull is raised affects its behavior more than almost anything. Pit bull dogs are very high spirited, independent minded animals that need structure and order in their "pack." They are terriers after all. Without structure, the dog follows its own rules, which can get it into trouble.
Pit bulls are not any more submissive than any other type of dog. That "fact" is crap.
Disclaimer:
-I am not here to diss on pits. I am actually trying to promote them, but with a proper understanding of the dog.
Oh no, I'm not upset. I like seeing posts about pits. I just don't like it when biased information is posted because then people go out and get pits thinking they're this perfect animal that can do absolutely no harm, and then don't train them. Then I think we all know what happens.
The misspelled words bother me as a Grammar Nazi but as a German Shepherd breeder, trainer, and animal behaviorist the majority of facts here is true. The only thing I would have to challenge is the obvious lack of knowledge by the poster regarding canine genetics (I am a canine genetics expert), inheritable temperament and personality traits, and the results of ignorant "backyard breeders" who breed dogs that are NOT breeding quality and therefore perpetuate dogs with "weak nerves" as well as allowing pups to leave at FAR too young (8 weeks is the youngest a pup should EVER leave it's dam and litter) which causes social issues later in life as pups learn valuable lessons about how to "be a dog" including proper pack behavior between 6 and 10 weeks of age.
Today it's pit bulls. But when my mom was a kid Dobermans were the dangerous dogs. People forgot that when pit bulls became the preferred scapegoats, but hopefully pit bulls won't always be misunderstood so harshly.
