I'd like to do this, but the thing is, I never see any homeless people in my area. I'm in a smaller town, you usually see the homeless people in the bigger cities.
I read an online discussion once about this sort of thing. A few people who had been homeless were giving their opinions about these gift boxes. It seems like most of the contents were not actually that useful. According to the formerly homeless, the best things to get were money, prepaid calling cards/cell phones, socks, and basic medication/first aid supplies. Food wasn't as useful because of various dietary restrictions and whatnot. I would personally add Dollarama gift cards too because you can get a lot of useful things for cheap.
i am SO doing this. now i am going to think about what i would want:
-socks/gloves/warm hat
-coat/blanket
-tylenol/aleeve/or something like that
-girl-products (if you know what i mean)
-a good book
-def a little money/pre-paid phone card/etc.
-and a good convo with someone nice
(what else you guys think?)
like aspirin or ibuprofen for like aches and pains....are you serious?! so because they are homeless they should not have access to pain relief?! i think maybe they should keep the "drugs" away from you. o.0
We're doing this in my finance class. We're going to have a "packing party" and bring in food and stuff so we can have fun and put the boxes together with the stuff in them
Well, I never did that in primary school. But some people I know do a thing where poor people ask for things they need for Christmas for their kids (like coats, and shoes and stuff) and then they give it to them and the parents say the kids got it from Santa. It's really nice and a great idea.
I'm all for helping those in need, but most people need to help themselves first. You know the saying, give a man a fish he eats for a day, teach him how to fish and he eats for a lifetime.
I'm in Detroit... I mean IN Detroit. I'm going to share this to my entire school, were pretty into doing charity drives, so this is going to be huge (I hope)! Can't wait to get this started!!
My friends and I just made over a hundred of those shoeboxes for operation Christmas child, but we also regularly give food to the homeless and work at soup kitchens. We try our best but I wish we could do more:/
There's a church in North Carolina that promotes this. I'm from Puerto Rico, and just today my youth group from church was filling in the boxes to send them next week to the airport and then they go to the church. From there, they need some kind of government permit and finally a week or so later, they go to Africa, India and places of low resources. Not all churches are bad, it's just the persons in them. I bet everyone will go all "oh, religious, crucify them" but it's not just what we believe in, but how much we change our lifestyles to seek values and morals. Stop judging and start respecting others. I beg all of you to forgive the church. None of us is perfect, and we're the lowest of the lowest, we just want people to respect us like we real Christians respect others, no those cheap ones that judge others and condemn to he'll just because you drink, have sex or whatever...
Sorry for the long post, just felt a bit... Whatever no one cares, sorry...
I litterally just did the top one for children around the world in need and gave them Christmas toys and hygiene items and it made me feel really good in church today
There aren't any homeless people in my town. It's such a small town that literally everybody knows everybody accept the tourists. But I really like this idea!!! I'd stay with him/her and watch him open it. It would be really great! I kind of have mixed feelings about homeless people because some homeless people are homeless because of drugs and alcohol and when giving them money they just might go and buy some more. You never know what they're gunna buy with the money you give them so you don't know if giving them money is really even helping them. It's really frustrating. With this you can give them useful things and maybe even a gift card or something. At least then you KNOW that you're helping them.
Some homeless that abuse alcohol and drugs are that way because they have mental illness and that's how they self medicate. we have a big problem with mental illness in this country. my mom always taught me to give; whether or not they use it on drugs/alcohol is none of my concern, b/c at the end of the day, if i discriminate everyone that needs help as being drug addicts, i could possibly deny someone that really would use it on food/clothes/or a hotel room for the night. everyone thinks different and my husband always gets mad at me cuz i will fork over money when someone asks but i believe charity should be done directly and it makes me happy. if they use it for alcohol/drugs, thats on their conscience, mine is clean b/c i helped out how i could at the time. (that's just me tho)
I think that that's fantastic! I wasn't saying that I won't give any money at all to the homeless because I'm not sure what they'll spend it on. I meant that this seems more affective since you know you're helping :)
This is a great idea. :) Let's also not forget that many homeless people have a pet, normally a dog, who means the world to them. A small bag of dog food, new leash and collar and maybe a chew toy would make their friend happy too :)
My secondary school does this every year. Each person brings at least five things to put in some boxes, and each class has three gigantic boxes and we fill them and give the stuff to poor families or we go out with the huge box and hand stuff out to homeless people. And their faces when they receive it is just so heart warming :)
My school is doing something like this. A-Ok kits; helping the less fortunate get on their feet and start a job.
the kits include dress clothes, shoes, accessories, job applications, toiletries, and other items the person may need to go into a job interview. C:
charity should be done directly. i have learned that a lot of these "non-profit" organizations keep a lot of the money to keep the organization going. cut out the middle man and go do it yourself! it feels so good to see the people you are giving and their reaction is the best reward.
