It's funny because he actually befriended those pirates and told them that if the brought him home safely he would happily give them the money they wanted as a symbol of friendship, the price increase wasn't his ego talking it was a play to try and befriend those pirates. (side note when the pirates brought him back he ordered them all killed because he doesn't take shit from anyone)
