Wow according to that map I live in Switzerland! Neat! I always wanted to be neutral and rich and own a luxury watch. (National stereotypes engage!)
Srsly tho, I understand that a common European knows american states as much as a common American knows european countries - not at all. I'm not even able to name all the 50 states of America, I admit. BUT! Maps aren't made by common folk, they're made by cartographers, people who studied their whole fucking life for this. And if even a cartographer doesn't know, then I'm seriously starting to question America's level of education. If you present us this abomination and call it a legitimate map, how are we supposed to stop the " 'muricans are dumb" jokes?
First of all, I'd agree on the "average person from X continent knows next to nothing about the layout of continent Y" I would even go so far as to say most above average people wouldn't notice a variance such as this. Can any of you non-Americans honestly say if I showed you a map of the US and swapped the names of two states you would be able to pick it out? Unless you happen to have visited there, the chances of it are EXTREMELY unlikely.
As to the "maps are made by cartographers" bit, what makes you think an actual cartographer made this map? I can with 99% surety say this was just given to an intern and told "hey were doing a piece on this, get us a map for it, make sure its not copyrighted" so the intern did it him/herself based on what they thought they knew. Also, how would you know it was an American cartographer that made it? Just because an American news reporter used it doesn't mean it wasn't foreign made.
Guest: Well I'm glad you agree with me on that one thing and your theory on the map being made by an intern is interesting. But in that case the intern must have been an absolute idiot who hasn't apparently discovered the concept of internet and the fact that you can actually find stuff there. They thought he knew? They thought wrong. Well, I guess idiots have to work somewhere too.
Your theory of the map being made by a non-american seems less likely to me. You said yourself that stuff used on news shouldn't be copyrighted, which means they couldn't probably just google "map of Europe" and use it. So it was probably made for the news only. But why would they hire a foreigner? If they heard a name to contact about this, it means the person is probably good enough to be adviced to somebody. But in that case they wouldn't do such a horrible job. No, I think they just used somebody at hand.
Though I'm glad you told me your opinion in a non-violent way. We could use more guests like you.
That was my point, genius. Europeans know as much about America as Americans know about Europe, which means we should respect each other at that. But when you constantly keep embarrassing yourself like this, how are we supposed to stop insulting you?
It doesn’t have to be a European international it could have been anyone. The person could have been from Mongolia for all we know. It was a mistake that anyone who doesn’t give two shits for a lil bitty useless country might make. And I’m oh so sorry that Americans focus on learning better things than “where is Austria?” Or “thats the old Ottoman Empire”
"Muh country is importanter than yours" sounds like you got some complexes you gotta deal with, buddy.
As I said before (y'know, those 3 years ago), you don't have to know where all the countries are that but maybe you should know how to use google, it would be enough in this situation.
1) I’m not your buddy. I don’t have any complexes, but thanks for your medical opinion. America is a terrible country and not really above any others.
2) all I’m saying is maybe the person who made this is a foreigner and didn’t understand what was asked of them and/or they didn’t have time to do anything else but slap a map together.
3) And MAYBE, just MAYBE, you're busy wasting time complaining about the ignorance of Americans (because you’ve seen one person fuck up a map when they had maybe 5 min. to construct a map for this story) and it might not even be an American as this was broadcasted by CNN an international news organization. But I’m just a random kid on the Internet so I must be dumb, have several disorders, and I must be a troll!
It's a well known fact that education in the US is slightly below average when compared to other modern countries. Saying that as I did in my older comments wasn't complaning or judging based on one situation, it was just stating facts.
Also, ironically, this "it was a foreigner" theory of yours doesn't work because according to the statistics, foreigners outperform naturally born Americans.

I'm pretty sure we weren't Switzerland, not even back then. We were under Austria-Hungary, but that's all. This map is just wrong, don't look for any historical context to it.

Be strong, fellow funsubster! Don't give in to the ignorance!
