Froggo Fren #56 - Cascades Frog 1 comments

"Rana cascadae" - winter? snow problem. Found throughout the Pacific Northwest (and named for the Cascade Mountain Range), these frogs feature anywhere from 3 to 50 dark patches on their back (making them quite easy to spot) It's believed the peptides they secrete may have medicinal applications. Despite their wide distribution, their populations seem to be declining, and they are classified as Near Threatened. (Their favorite songs to play on Spotify are those by Cascada. They don't know why, but without you it's hard to survive. It's as if they need a miracle)

"Rana arvalis" - the moor you know. Despite their name, they are found in a wide variety of habitats, ranging from forests to steppes to semi-desserts to even tundras. Normally they are reddish-brown in color, but males can turn a bluish hue (as pictured) for 2-3 days a year. (This usually happens after being rejected by a female, and is generally accompanied by the male curling up into a ball)

"Pseudacris maculata" - fo' real, they're boreal. They're found in some parts of the United States, and throughout Canada as far north as the southern Yukon. Like most frogs living in colder climates, they deal with it by burying themselves in vegetation on the forest floor, and partially freezing themselves. When spring arrives, they're usually among the first animals to emerge. Their call has been described as low and metallic. (It is thought the reason for this is their innate love of Swedish death metal)

'Rana sylvatica" - the frogsicle. Found throughout most of Canada and the Eastern United States, this tiny forest frog does not fear the frost. When temperatures begin to drop, they can freeze up to 65% of their body in order to survive. That's right, they literally put themselves on ice (unlike Jeffrey Epstein) They do this by generating glucose, as well as urea which prevent their cells from suffering damage from the ice crystals. (Contrary to popular belief, sucking on them will not cure any ailments. Please do not engage in non-consensual frozen frog fellatio)
