Alan Turing 5 comments

It's hard for anyone who's ever used any digital device to not at least have heard his name. Alan Turing (1912-1954) is widely considered the father of theoretical computing. Plus it's estimated that his work in cracking the German Enigma Machine during World War II may have shortened the war in Europe by 2 years and may have saved 14 million lives. And how was he rewarded for his monumental contributions to humankind? Why, by being convicted for gross indecency and chemically castrated because he was gay, of course. A formal apology and posthumous pardon was issued by the British government about 50 years after his death. (I'm sure that did him a tonne of good)

Frogs in Fiction #28 - Zuma 6 comments
happy_frog · 4 years ago
You're a frog playing with colorful balls in Aztec-themed levels. Presumably, Zuma is not the name of the frog but short for Montezuma, the ancient Aztec emperor whose secrets you are trying to uncover by delving into the depths of his twelve temples. Developed by PopCap and published in 2003, it was and some would say remains a staple of casual puzzle games. RealArcade even awarded it "Game of the Year" in 2004. (Maybe its appeal stems from it being a family friendly version of ballbusting. I don't know, some people are into that)

Spanish, 'murciélago.' It sounds badass, but it actually means 'blind mouse.' Oddly enough, it's also a manga about a lesbian assassin.

German, 'glücklich.' Their word for a very lucky person is also interesting: Glückspilz, literally 'happiness mushroom' (they know what's up)

It doesn't matter to me. You can post whatever you like. I just feel a bit awkward for confusing the two.

Greek, 'κατάρα' (katára) I find it interesting that it's almost identical to Katara (from Avatar) Of course, her name means 'beautiful.' Still a funny coincidence.
