Happy 14th of July! (Joyeux Quatorze Juillet!) 3 comments

We interrupt Shark Week to bring you...the French. Aaaah, the French, always celebrated for their contributions to the ideals of modern liberal democracy.
The National Day of France, also called Bastille Day in English, celebrates the storming of the eponymous political prison on the 14th of July 1789. Though holding only 7 prisoners at the time, it was seen as symbol of royal authority and oppression. Its fall galvanized the French Revolution and the subsequent transition of France from a monarchy to a republic.
The pictured painting is, fittingly enough, called "Storming of the Bastille" by Jean-Pierre Houël. (May have to summon @purplepumpkin for more details.)
This holiday is usually celebrated with parades, air shows, and fireworks. (Not sure if they re-enact the Bastille battle as well.)

It appears so. But further practical research into this subject may be necessary.

Tell me something, my friend. You ever dance with an apex predator in a pale aquarium tank?

Hence my concern. But if at least one another person understands, I am quite grateful. So thank you.

The takos won't give up their Tuesday so easily. (I'd also make an "Ina vs. Gura" joke, but I'm not sure how many here would get it.)

A rather strange movie featuring an odd blend of horror and sci-fi and premiering fitting enough on the SyFy Channel in 2010, this film explores what happens when a bio-weapon (the eponymous Sharktopus) goes awry. Despite its weirdness, it was successful enough to spawn two just as twisted sequels: Sharktopus vs. Pteracuda (2014) and Sharktopus vs. Whalewolf (2015). If nothing else, the animal hybrids are at least...interesting. (Like if someone took the half-and-half creatures from Avatar and turned them into B movie monsters.)

No better time to be grateful for sharks than Shark Week.
The above pic, of course, shows their ecological importance as apex predators. And naturally that does impact humans as well. For example, in some areas sharks keep stingray populations under control.
These rays would otherwise feed on scallops and quahogs until there'd be nothing left for people to harvest (shark bros know the land homies like clam chowder).
But an even greater impact is sharks' ability to capture the imagination. The most famous example is "Jaws". However, sharks also bring a lot in tourism revenue (through cage diving) in places like the Bahamas.
All in all, they certainly have a knack for showmanship.

Guess what they're called. That's right: angel sharks. (Well, they're also called sand devils, but that's really a matter of perspective.)

Well, unless they're hungry and mistake you for a seal. But even then, it's not like you really taste good to them anyway.

Probably not the cuddliest representative of shark people, this savage demigod of the seas was born from the Shark God and a human mother, and hails from Hawaii.
First appearing in 1994 as an adversary of Superboy, he later more fittingly became a recurring villain of Aquaman. He is also often seen as a member of the Suicide Squad (including in the upcoming "The Suicide Squad" movie where he'll be voiced by Sylvester Stallone).
It is worth remembering that his behavior is NOT typical of most sharks. For one, regular sharks tend not to come on land. But despite being often portrayed as a blood-thirsty man-eater (he will chew you up, boy) there are more recent incarnations that show him in a less brutish light, such as the one in the "Harley Quinn" TV series. (Harley is a trained psychologist after all. Who's to say she can't help sharks, too?)

Shark Week is an annual programming block on the Discovery Channel which started airing in 1988 on July 17th. Since then, it's aired every year for a week, usually during July or August. Its aim was to give sharks better PR and to correct misconceptions about them. This year it will be airing from July 11th to July 18th. And in honor of that, I shall drop my regular series and post shark-related stuff this week. And just like actual shark attacks, you won't know when these posts are coming, but you'll most likely survive them.

Caturday Week 8 - Ragdoll Cats 5 comments

I know what you're thinking: Do these cats adhere to ragdoll physics? Sorta. They get their name from their tendency to relax or go limp when picked up.
They're a very docile breed but also very strong with a high threshold for pain (it's highly recommended not to test this though). What makes them really great companions however is their tendency to exhibit dog-like behavior. As such, they belong to a rather exclusive class known as puppy cats. (Whether or not they bark at other cats or dogs has yet to be determined.)
