Spoilers: It wasn't. Tough modern Roanoke in Viginia might be a good place to live, @roanoke's name refers to the first attempt made by the British to colonize North America in 1585. The colony was found abandoned 5 years, which is why it's also known as the Lost Colony.

Also, the first pilgrims actually arrived 30 years after the colony was found deserted (in 1620) but I feel it still somewhat fits the theme.
