Bollocks.
Marriage is a massive party with your life savings.
If you want to have a stoic day in reflection, and the future, then get married at home in front of the TV.
If she wanted to paint her body green, and fart the national anthem (carefully of course, those dresses are expensive), then it's HER day too and why on earth can't she enjoy it?

What does it take, three to five minutes to remove make-up?
He's been waiting most of his life for this, and he can't wait five minutes for this woman with a sense of fun?

I know it's been a while, but when I was out there, the worst idea for a FIRST date, is dinner and a movie.
