I don't think this is quite true xD Twitter is largely used by the older generations. It's used to advertise jobs etc as well.

I have NEVER stood in a shop, and used math that way.
I look at a shirt, its $12. Good. I look at a skirt, it's $20. Good. I want to buy a jacket, it's $20. Oh no, that's $2 more than I wanted to spend, better get the one that's $18. Simple math. Add and subtract. No use for algebra.
