In 1942 the Nazis scrapped their nuclear weapons program. After finding this out, a Polish scientist working on the Manhattan Project resigned immediately. Fearful that further dissemination of this information would lead to more scientists abandoning the program before a viable weapon was made, the US government threatened to deport the Polish scientist if he didn’t keep quiet
