The geometry of this photo confuses me. Is the ground flat? If so, why are there stairs? If it's not flat, how???? what indicates any clue of not flat-ness?

A few years ago, we were 4 friends watching this beautiful movie. It was around 3 am, we had been working all week. 10 minutes later, they were two watching the movie while me and a guy were having a fit of laughter outside the room we had just been kicked out of.
