I forget to say that fugl/fågel means bird and hund means dog. I love comparing Scandinavian languages. It's especially cool that it is fairly easy for us in Scandinavia to understand written Swedish/Norwegian/Danish. The spoken language is very different. Norwegians and Swedes understand each other pretty well, and I think the Danes understand us too. But no one understands them.

The book paints the monster as a tragic figure. I always think that Hollywood has done him an injustice. The 90s film with De Niro is my favorite portrayal. He is so pitiable.

Thanks for the tip! I love this subject. I'm studying archaeology in my free time, so rather slow-going. One of my favorite books is by Dr. William Maples "Dead Men do Tell Tales." Among other things he identified the remains of the murdered Romanovs back in the 90s.
