I believe Cuba's Government should let their citizens be able to read whatever they want instead of approved material from the Government. I think homeschooling is a fine alternative for parents equipped to handle the task. I was positing a wild theoretical where I could achieve 100% literacy to demonstrate that the means define the end.

And to concede one part of you, yes it's a good thing Cuban adults can read, but they cannot read any materials that the Cuban Government has not approved of. It's like if Trump taught every kid how to read, using The Art of the Deal as what to use to teach them, enforced by the federal government and the stateside officials just let that happen for some reason.

Because all you have demonstrated is that you fixate on ends instead of means, and can only insult or strawman me without actually providing an argument. The crux of my stance is on the means, leading to the ends. Yes we should read. Yes we should encourage more and more citizens of the US to be fluent in whatever language they speak. My point is that Cuba does not have the same rights that they should have as nature of being free, from ethical and philosophical reasons. I could achieve 100% US literacy by bombarding each square inch of the earth in such a manner that I would be the last living United States citizen and clear up obesity AND have a higher literacy rate than literally everyone else.

Parents teaching their kids to read is a bad idea as is avoiding overt political propaganda? Can you attack my idea instead of assuming wildly baseless assumptions of my character and beliefs?

*facepalm* It's good to know you at least understand part of my point. Add " Fidel Castro's Manifesto" to the end of that sentence. If you want higher literacy asking for government intervention is NOT the way to go about it. And while you're here, pick a language for Americans to learn out of the 500 or so that have been spoken since it's existence. It would be better to start at the bottom of the problem than think the top level of the federal system would be better. Encourage guardians and parents to teach their kids how to, free of political propoganda.

You can force ANYONE to do anything. But once you do, you assume the maxim that if it's for their own good, you can force anyone to do anything. And then personal freedom degrades, or is expunged entirely because some stuck up manlet thinks Cuba should be lauded for being a Dictatorship that forced their populace to read Castro's Manifesto.

Who ever said learning to read was a bad thing? I'm merely saying the reason why they were taught is not as humane as you posit it to be. The reality is they were taught to how to by a authoritarian regime who wanted them to be only able to learn so they could rattle off political positions of the ruling party. If any political party in the US said they were going to teach your kids how to read, they don't want literate kids, they want kids reading that they WANT them to read. Republicans would sell them whatever they fuck they want them to believe to vote and keep them in, and same for the Democratic Party. I could be taught how to read Korean in a North Korean prison camp, but what's the point all I'm reading is state propaganda? Furthermore, what's the official language of the United States? There isn't one. You'd have to introduce an official language of the country, and then teach it to those who don't speak, read, or write it. 500 different languages have been spoken here.

They were only taught to read so they could read Castro's book and anything they can read has to get past government censors, which while they can read, they can only read what the totalitarian, dictatorship allows them to read. But don't get me wrong, they may live their lives deprived of the freedom to choose what they can read, but they can read.

You really don't know why the Cuban government forces their population to learn how to read, do you?

I feel like this could fit into the dictionary as an example of "Cherry Picking" especially if you know why Cubans are taught to read by their governing rulers.

I believe there were some rumors that popped up about the M16 that it was self cleaning as well that led to improper or neglected maintenance which compounded those issues. Plus people still liked guns with wooden stocks and bodies, and the M16 felt cheap and weird with it's plastic. Also the theory about the M16 being shafted has some weight in that most people still preferred the M14 as the weapon of choice, despite the flaws it had. It fell in line with the more traditional idea of what a service rifle should be.

Well, when one's rooting through your shit, threatening livestock/family/friends, or damaging property and you happen to have a semi-automatic weapon with no select-fire capability I wouldn't complain.
