Because whether you are for or against firearms, you should know how to talk about them properly, with the correct terminology.
.
If you are a proponent of gun control, if you can talk about them correctly and in a way that the enthusiasts will understand what the hell you are saying, they MIGHT take you a tiny little bit more seriously.
.
Also, knowing more about them might help you see through the media demonization and realize that the "problem" isn't that bad and that the issue actually lies with the people, not the tools they use for harm.
Just about anything in North America depending on it's chambering. And there are multiple gun "sports" like 3 gun competition, ranged target shooting, IDPA etc
The standard AR-15 is chambered in (meaning that's the size round it uses) .223 Remington, or NATO 5.56x45 millimeter. The bullet is actually not much larger than a 22, though it does have quite a bit more power behind it.
.
.223 is most often used for hunting small to medium-small game, though most hunters classify it as a "varmint" round.
.
Truth be told, the .223 is ineffective for larger game like deer, the most popular game to hunt. My understanding is that you would want to use .308 Winchester for that.
.
Honestly, it sounds like you have succumbed to the demonization thinking spread by the media. Dispite that rifle looking like and being portrayed as being "big and scary," it isn't as much as they want you to think.
Deer and hog can both be taken cleanly with .223. Remington even markets a specific round for feral hogs. I might not go for anything bigger than whitetail with that round but notice I did say depending on what the rifle was chambered for. There are plenty of choices that pack more punch like the 6.8 and 300 black out etc.
I heard that it is legal to shoot feral hog from a helicopter. Ha! Sign me up for that! ( smitty...was just asking cuz ot said ask if you have any questions).
A magazine is a detachable box that the ammunition is loaded into. This allows you to carry spares and reload with some relative speed by removing the empty one and replacing it.
.
A clip, sometimes also called a "stripper clip" is a metal strip that rounds of ammunition are attached to when they are shipped. With an adapter, this allows for the rapid reloading of the magazines, rather than tedious single round loading.
.
Some rifles take clips directly, like the M1 Garand. (Loaded through the top.) In any period war movie that's done well and accurate, when you see it being shot: pop, pop, pop-ting! and a small piece of metal is elected out the top. That's the rifle ejecting the empty clip. As good as a rifle the M1 is, this part was a bit of a poor design because the Germans learned to listen for that distinctive "Ting!" and to look out for that ejected clip. It signaled that the soldier was out of ammo.
.
Magazine and Clip are related but are different in function.
If you have a disagreement with firearms and you can present your opinion with a cogent argument to that end, you may be taken seriously. I will disagree with you, but I will respect you. I will listen to you and some of your talking points I may even agree with.
.
With a statement like that however... well, you will do nothing but alienate the very people you are trying to speak to.
"Why on earth did I need to know this?"

No, dear friend. Power is power.
