Well I hope I'm not, most of my homework is from maths, I have maths 9 out of 10 days, 2 of which are double maths periods and I get at least 2-4 hours just on math. I also have a crazy eng teacher who sets 2 hrs a night, luckily I only have eng 7/10 days.
Take in consideration this are AP classes meaning advanced placement. They get more homework than the average high school kid so more hours of homework.
However, at least at my high school, students are often pressured to take more AP classes than they can handle, to the point that "the average high school kid" has that kind of schedule.
If this was directed at college students, I may understand...but honestly, high school was so easy. I can't imagine needing 6+ hours to work on any homework.
This episode of Modern Family is one of my favorites. It actually showed how stressful it is for kids in high school and how sometimes parents don't really understand the amount of pressure there is. I'm glad the show got to address that.
Assigning homework by time? Thats a sign of a shit school system.
The school system I graduated out of prohibited the teachers from assigning homework by time, no matter how high level the class was.
.
The logic was that the understanding of a concept should be learned to a standard, not a time. It was seen as the sign of a poor teacher that couldn't effectively teach the subject in class if they required a homework grind like this.
.
They also banned grading on a curve. They felt that you should get the grade you earned.
This is exactly what the people in Denmark is trying to change. When schools start again, the oldest students is gonna have around 38 hours of school per week. 2 hours is gonna be added into the schedule each day were it's mandatory for people to show up (like any other lesson). Teachers is gonna be present, and is gonna help the students with their homework, which means the students is gonna go home at the end of the day, without needing to worry about tons of work when they get home.
(Btw, I don't know much about American schools, so this could sound like bulls**t to anyone outside of Denmark, but to us, it's a big step in the right direction :)).
I don't see why this is such an issue. All through grade school and high school, I had homework maybe 5 nights. For 12 years. And I graduated with great grades. The only kids that had homework were the ones who screwed around in class and didn't do their work when given the time.
My daughter is in elementary school and has homework 5 nights a week throughout the school year. It is work specifically assigned to be done at home. They are not given time to do it in class. She routinely has 2 to 3 hours a night to do, and parents were notified to expect more next school year. Not all schools are as gracious as yours in giving children time to do homework at school.
I've talked to the principal and superintendent to no avail. I completely agree, it's not acceptable but there isn't much I can do. We plug along and get it done and use summers as our free time.
Where are you going that you even get 8? Most schools that are 5 days a week go from about 8-3, including a lunch. Thats stretching it to 7 hours. You don't get to count the hour before school getting ready, you dont get to count the hour long bus ride (if you ride the bus and are last dropped off), and you honestly shouldn't get to count the lunch time either because you know what? When you graduate and get a real job, they won't pay you for that time so stop counting it.
I don't think I want any of the advanced classes.
I'll just get my diploma and enlist, mush less stress.
I'll save my education for when I'm in a more stable position.

It found FS!
Who the hell let IT into FS!
I want it gone, now! An internet hug to whoever gets rid of it!
