2. Uncheck "Show annotations, channel promotions and interactive cards on videos"
3. Profit!

You can use the "gear" button on an individual video to turn ON annotations for that video. If, for example, there is a "click here" to go to another video, and you want to click it.
Yes, that what I do. Turn them off in the video by clicking on the gear, rather than the global settings.

Most videos are non intrusive and the annotation function is how the content creators got the "click here" to see more of our/my friend's channel, next video in the series, ect. on screen links to work.
Turn annotations off and those links stop working.

Annotation overload is also a good gauge for production value. If it looks like a pop up blocker puked on my video, chances are, I'm not going to be watching much further after I turn that shit off.
