The only patches of light are illuminated oversize portraits of The Great Leader, his father and his grandfather (still nominally head of state).

There is also a town that is said to be populated, but the lights are actually set on timers.

Ok I know I am going to get down votes for this but could the White line be security lights or something? But most likely to show North Korea by the poster

Yup. The entire strip of no-man's-land is probably flooded in limelight throughout the night to catch anybody trying to escape this paradise on earth.
