I think maybe this has happened because nowadays it seems everyone thinks one simple thing or sentence means something a lot bigger, so they can now take (For example) a box, and say that whoever created it created it because they are mentally trapped by something, and so people are now finding many different meanings in the simplest of things.
So I went to MoMa in NYC with my family once and saw a fairly big room with genitals drawn on the walls. Some people saw it as art, I saw it as some doodles from pre-school. Art is very subjective is what I'm trying to say.

BECAUSE OF THIS, I AM SERIOUSLY THINKING OF DRAWING A PLAIN DIAGONAL LINE ON A PIECE OF PAPER AND NAMING IT HORIZONTAL LINE! This is what I'll tell them
"It's a metaphor for life because things aren't always what they seem"
I can 95% guarantee that they will take it.
THEN: "Art" was commissioned by a wealthy patron or maybe a church. Anybody who brought that weak cr@p didn't earn a living as an artist.
NOW: Much art is paid for by a third party who doesn't hold a high standard as if it were one's own money (government, university...). If you criticize anything that's absurdly stupid, well, you just don't "get it." The ethnicity or gender of the artist is important to judging its merit. "Art"doesn't have to stand on its own. So, we accept dreck, and get dreck, then dreck mimics that are worse than dreck, then that lower standard becomes the new normal.
