I have hot tea in a plastic cup, so I have no where to put the string

Hot + plastic= bad chemicals being released from the plastic
Unless it stated it was BP free when you bought it

First things first: there are no bad chemicals, just some that harm your health.
But I can agree with you on it being 'bad'.
I would not trust the label BP free.
And most important: I think tea tastes better in a porcelain or glass cup.
