I've tried to study dutch, And I have a problem you might be able to help with: some sources said that "ij/y" was pronounced as [i] while other sources say it's pronounced as [a]. Maybe It's a dialectal thing?
I'm not Dutch, but it's pronounced more like /ay/ in English "bay". The history of all languages is full of such misunderstandings and garbled loan words.
Also. a lot of whalers in the 17th century were Dutch, and they may have been the ones first describing this giant shark.
