My company records pianos in an anechoic chamber. They put microphones in the right places and then hit the notes on the piano - the microphones pick up the sound as usual. The room is designed to deaden reverb, so you can record/analyse sound with a clarity you can't get anywhere else. If you want a room that's actually silent, you need no air - ie a vacuum, ie you'd die.
I don't think the problem for us Funsubsters is going in. I think the problem would be leaving. Imagine that nice quiet, then coming out to this noisy hell.

Extreme silence like that can cause atrophy of your ears due to not being used, the same way going into space for too long makes your legs weaker. It's just that your ears are far more sensitive to that stuff.
People who have lost their hearing through accident or disease don't generally go insane. If someone can't handle their own thoughts or the sounds their body makes, that's their problem.
