Before the ring got to him, he WAS a hobbit.
His name was Smeagol.
He was just and ordinary hobbit, then, for his birthday, he went fishing for his birthday.
Long story short he murdered his friend and fled to the caves, where the hobbit him rotted and turned into the creature Gollum.

I thought it was a "hobbit-like creature" not actually an actual hobbit though
