All for it but don't take it too far because then you'll have a kid that's incapable of doing things alone and will need you to be there rather than want you to be
It never mentions that there is no punishment. Yes you can assume that, but being able to talk to your parents shouldn't mean that you never get punished. Perhaps there are punishments but also the understanding that they fucked up so it's justified.
This reminds me of a post from while back. So all these parents on Facebook was sharing a quote about how raising teens is like nailing jello to a tree.
Then one mom nailed one of the jello cups to the tree with the quote " it's easier with some support "

I wish that'd happen to me. Unfortunately, my parents don't understand pretty much anything about how my life goes, and whenever I do open up to them, it's like they're just trying to find flaws to berate me about. I want help, not criticism.
Sounds more like a best friend than a parent. Lots of parents want to abdicate the difficult role for that of "friend." Unfortunately, there's nobody else to fill the void left by a mother or father. But, as long ass it makes you feel good, that's what really matters, right?
Actually this is about making the child feel good. You shouldn't have holy hell rained upon you for making a mistake. You shouldn't get kicked out of your home for trying something out of curiosity. It's human nature.
Being a best friend rather than a parent would be " sure blow off your homework it's fine ", " want some more alcohol, I'll buy you some ", " sure you can dress in a skirt that barely covers your cooch and you're 14 "

It sucks.
