I think it's ridiculous that he was given than bravery award, he didn't deserve it what so ever.. The other nominees actually deserved to be recognized
After seeing all these Bruce Jenner things...
I hate him/her/it (and as a corollary I hate those who gave him the bravery award) intensely for one reason and one reason only. He doesn't deserve to be recognized for changing gender. He should be recognized for his Olympic accomplishments. You shouldn't be recognized for who you are, you should be recognized for what you do.
Caitlyn Jenner is brave for showing the world who she really is and refusing to live a lie, thus making it slightly easier for transgender people everywhere. War veterans are brave for fighting for their country and coming back, possibly with injuries/PTSD, to limited recognition and support. Little kids fighting cancer are brave for refusing to give in to a terrible disease. Bravery is not a competition, and there are different kinds of bravery. The people in charge of the award probably wanted to show that bravery takes many forms.
The problem is that it shouldn't take bravery to be yourself. It's not a sacrifice. Bravery should include selfless and/or unconditional sacrifice whereas being yourself should be a socially accepted norm. The only reason why Jenner got the award is because society is so oppressive of people out of norm that being out of norm publicly is brave. It shouldn't be.
You're right. It absolutely should not have to take bravery to be yourself. But we live in a society that oppresses anything/anyone out of the perceived "norm" so we have to recognise those who have the courage to step outside of the "norm." Maybe someday we'll have a society that doesn't crush anything that's different, but in order to get to that place we have to realise that not everyone can fit in the same mould and that's fine because the mould is bullshit anyway.
No, I don't think he's had a sex change operation yet. Although he is pretty fucking crazy. I wouldn't be surprised if he turned out to be a lizard-man or something.
Double standards everywhere.
