Plot twist: Chlorine is an elemental gas and isn't filtered out by ordinary masks. Only a sealed system respirator can handle that.

What about anthrax? Or at least asbestos?

Those are large molecules and can be filtered. For optimum effectiveness, different types of filters are used.

False. Chlorine was the very first war gas that gas masks were developed to defend against.

Actually it was mustard gas, a combination of chlorine and ammonia

Nope...
Chlorine gas was the first lethal chemical weapon:

Mustard gas:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sulfur_mustard
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nitrogen_mustard
No combination of chlorine and ammonia will produce mustard gas. Even nitrogen mustards require some organic (carbon containing) chemical in their manufacture. ....Although mixing the two is still a very bad idea. Depending on the ratio, hydrazine or even nitrogen trichloride could be produced (both are toxic and explosive).

I have the same fear. I put one on one time and all of the sudden I couldn't remember who my mummy was. Some guy with big ears and a blonde girl had to help me figure it out

Chlorine isn't so much "filtered" by a gas mask as it is removed from the air by reacting with chemicals that the "filter" canisters are packed with.
