Really? Because just in the past week we had a 15 year old attack a police station in Australia as well as knife attacks and shootings in Israel, just to name a few.
I see it as. If measures were taken a long time ago things wouldn't be as bad, but the guns are already here illegaly and it's not like they're going anywhere. Might as well have something to defend yourself with besides a sign that says no guns allowed. My slight view anyway. Open to discussion
This "article" (and I use the term loosely, because it's the onion) is referencing the USA. I don't know what USA you know, but guns are FAR from illegal here. Statistics, studies, and the practices of other countries, have proven that the banning of (at least SOME types of) guns reduce the occurrence of mass shootings. By a LOT. Because guns are so readily available in this country, more people get hurt by them; however, if there was less access to these weapons, the united states would be a safer country.
Not everyone who uses a gun for a crime is a serial criminal. A man is much less likely to go and buy and illegal gun to kill his wife. Right now, its quite easy to go get guns. It can be a spur of the moment or a drunk decision. somecallmenoman, while its great to have guns for protection, the use of guns in defense is almost nonexistant.
Its not the weapon its the people. Mass killing happens in places with no citizen gun owenership. They have mass killings with knives in China pretty often. It all goes back to "Where there is a will there is a way."
I said this in a different post but these keep happening because these nut bags think they will become famous and get the attention they think they deserve from commiting such an act we need to not give these shit heads that attention and instead look towards the victims and their families the publicity has gotten out of hand
But it does seem like it happens more often in the US compared to other countries, not giving them the publicity is one thing, but something else needs to be done too.. taking away guns is a "quick fix", but what else can be done? (a real honest question.. we dont have these killings in Sweden.. perhaps I'm missing something that we are doing fundamentally different then you guys...) Is it just the fame or are they mentally ill?
Just saying it really irks me when people compare the US to other countries and say that their country is perfect and then condemn us when they dont even understand. To answer your question its alittle bit a both these people are hurt and angry at the world and want to hurt us, they want the attention they never got from their peers, parents or a love intetest.Taking away guns will not solve anything itll make it worse because we have the written and constitutional right to bear arms unlike other countries its not that easy. Maybe taking away guns will be a short term solution but it wont solve the problem. Guns have been in the US for centuries but these shootings didn't happen until the University of Texas sniper. So it is my view that the source is a desire to cause harm and get kind of a revenge against society for their mistreatment. And these people believe they will get that by killing as many people as possible and to get regognition. These are sad and broken people.
I do apologise if it came across as if I was saying that my country is perfect, that was not my intention at all. Sweden has many many problems that needs to be dealt with (like seriously.. prison here for example is like vacation). I am agreeing with you that removing guns would not solve anything, all I was trying to say (in a very clumsy way) was that for many from other countries that might seem like the ideal situation, the "quick fix".. "Oh look, we are definately not doing that.. so change to the way we are doing".. culturally that doesnt work, one cannot say that a thing that works in one country will work in another. I was just asking what you think needs to be done.. and now I got my answer.
You didnt offend i know you mean well. Its unfortunate that my opinion isn't widley viewed people either want to ignore the problem, blame guns, blindly defend guns or condemn these hurt people who dont see a way out. I do like you and appreciate your opinion.
Last time I checked the onion is a satire site. Not a news site. Secondly this sort of thing happens in many other countries as well. Our "media" sensationalizes such tragedies and makes it seem things have never been worse. Have you ever heard of Palestine, Syria, almost any west African country? There are whacked out bags of excrement the world over. Most of them hang out on the internet. At least most of these comments seem to understand the truth.
Last time I checked, you didn't need a fucking gun in your purse when you go to the grocery store- the access of guns and "normality" of it in America is ridiculous. This is so fucked up I can't even fathom how a great 1st world country is killing its own people, because some fucking idiots "have the right to bare arms" and need a gun with them always on person, in their homes, cars, and fucking offices. I am so tired of this shit. Clean yourself up America, I'm tired of watching you kill your own children and DO NOTHING PRODUCTIVE TO PREVENT SUCH THING FROM REOCCURRING. Guns should ONLY BE USED by hunters while out in the woods, police officers, and security personal ONLY. Not by fucking citizens when they're taking their kids to daycare. The problem isn't guns, it's the accessibility by almost everyone, and the social norm you have created of allowing people to carry concealed weapons or have a giant safe full of ammo accessed by anyone of your family of friends. You make me sick.
I'm pretty sure other countries don't have as many stupid ass people who decide to shoot up schools. Nothing to do with gun control. Just a lot of stupid ass people
I'm going with the slightly emotional guest. Gun accessibility is a problem, there needs to be more checks, more security, more follow ups and more laws placed into gun/weapon owners. A perfectly normal Nuclear family (2 kids, 2 parents) may be your normal group that has a shotgun and a pistol in their family gun safe, but the mother perhaps has a suicidal brother who ends up taking the gun from the safe since he knows the code, and takes it to school with him and we have another shooting. The problem is trying to prevent this, the most quickest way to stop someone from doing something illegal, is security. Security cameras, metal detectors, and guards. However a large sense of security is reassuring but also frightening, so how do we balance this? Regardless, this issue is a big one, but one that should not be thought about for a day or two after a mass shooting and then forgotten, but should be the kickstart to keep pushing to make tighter laws and to not import certain weapons.
Franklin had a lot of good stuff. I don't think people understand in today's terms what it was like to be completely pushed around by the government and that's why our forefathers went to great lengths to lay out a plan to keep it from happening in our future.
I feel like a lot of Americans are trying to talk their way out of having stricter laws(for whatever reason I can't seem to imagine), and it's funny because they're making excuses to people from nations who experience results first hand and the results are stricter gun laws= less gun crime. Therefore they fail to see how stupid they look from our perspective.
There's a lot more that goes into it than what you seem to be seeing. Me and my friend have arguments about this from time to time, he's more liberal in saying we shouldn't need guns but I'm more conservative saying we do. If you're not from the U.S. keep your nose out of our business. It's not as simple as you think. There's many more details that go into wether we should or shouldn't be allowed to carry. Most people aren't open minded or smart enough to see where each side is coming from, it seems only the next generation is
Come on - millennials native to the USA are the only people smart and complex enough to have a sensible debate about gun use? I don't find that very open minded at all.
