I thought they had to give you a certain amount of time unless you've done something horrible like pillaging the register.

It depends. In a right to work state I think you can be fired on the spot.

A couple of jobs I've had didn't tell the person they were fired until they came into work and saw they weren't on the schedule anymore.

North Dakota is an at-will state, so without a contract, you can quit or be fired on the spot. It's not very professional, but it's totally legal.

... I always wonder what is on the other side of these stories. As an employer, I can tell you it is usually difficult to actually fire someone. In most cases, it takes multiple documented offenses. On top of that, hiring and training are a big time suck.
