Excuse you.
Andrew Jackson avoided assassination several times. One of which the assassin ran up to him, attempted to shoot him with a flintlock pistol (misfired), and Jackson proceeded to beat him half to death with his cane.
The year was 1883, Roosevelt was living in North Dakota at the time. Upon entering a saloon in the town of Mingasville a drunk patron fired several shots at him. The man then pointed his firearm at Roosevelt’s face, mocked him with the term “four eyes,” and ordered him to buy a round for everyone in the establishment. Roosevelt laughed in the man’s face, then charged him and beat him senseless. The drunk fired one more shot at “four eyes”, which missed completely; Roosevelt then pounded the man’s head into the wooden bar until he was unconscious. Once the fracas was over, Roosevelt hauled his would-be assailant to a shed and locked him up until morning.
