Christmas is the celebration of Christ's birth. All of the traditions we have (Santa, presents, etc.) were added when we converted Saturnalia into Christmas. I don't know what this "war on christmas" controversy is about but I can definitely tell you that Christmas is about Jesus.
So I just did some research and its half pagan holiday half Christian holiday.the earliest Christmas was originally just a festival to celebrate when people thought Christ was born, but then the Romans integrated some pagan traditions and voila we have the modern Christmas.
Just to add to wolfpacks comment, at the time there was a pagan holiday that day but as Christianity wanted to convert people they put Christmas on the same day to compete with the holiday.
ACTUALLY Christmas is a pagan holiday that has nothing to do with Jesus and the Christians stole it from us as they were burning us at the steak for witchcraft. I mean probably not then but they did steal it from us.
Christmas was made on a pagan holiday to make the conversion transition easier for pagans hundreds of years ago. It definitely has meaning for Christians. Go to any church on christmas and you'll see.
what if i told you there is no war on christmas cuz no one non christian actually cares enough to fight a war, and some of us even celebrate it anyways?
It's actually based on German paganism. The pagans (even after they became Christians) kept celebrating their old holidays, so as a way to get rid of this, the church decided to celebrate the birth and crucifixion of Christ on those holidays in the hope of the pagans forgetting all about them. I guess it worked! The reason we put baubles in Christmas trees is to scare of evil spirits by showing them their own reflection. And the reason we look for eggs during easter, is because the pagans put eggs in the ground to increase the fertility.
Actually, if you go by biblical references to the season, Jesus was born in late spring/early summer. It's celebrated around this time because the Catholics wanted a reason to ban some holiday that celebrated a successful harvest (full of debauchery and drugs, granted).
But you know whose birthday IS in the winter? Sir Isaac Newton (Jan 4th)
So...happy Newtonmas to all, and to all a good night!
If you're well versed in the Bible, you'll come to realize that Jesus was born outside in a major while crops were still being taken care of which is roughly around October and the birth isn't relevant it's part of prophesy but the main importance was his random sacrifice at his death so yea Christmas is pagan
Nothing. But we're just trying to make the point that you're stupid for going up in arms that Christmas was and always is and should only be for Christians.
whoa dude I'm not saying that at all lol. That's just what Christians celebrate it for. Everyone else can celebrate Christmas for their own reasons. It's not about the origin of the holiday, it's about what we celebrate it for now. And that's how I celebrate it with my family.
honestly though I don't even see a war on Christmas. All I see is people just trying to whine about anything and trying to be the victim and being too sensitive. Just celebrate it how you want to. No one should tell you that it's only for Christians because that's bull.
Okay everyone hold your bladder. The date is most likely not the date of Jesus' birth. However, the tradition is older than most modern countries.
Go pick on Columbus Day
I choose to celebrate it for what it represents now, not its dark history.
