I remember the other day on the news, the worst crime in america was a mass shooting, and the worst thing in Australia was some guy who crashed into a shopping centre and nearly hit someone
"radically different" do you think that Australia is a backwards country, when I went there I could barely tell the difference from California besides the weather
Just because they're different doesn't mean that one's worse than the other. I'll always prefer Australia, due to living here and having seen many displeasing statistics about the US. But Americans would most likely prefer their country to mine, and I must admit that both the temperatures and game prices are often stupidly high.
Not sure if it's true but this is what's been circulating around other sites.

Hi Yanks, I thought you all would like to see the real
figures from Down Under. It has now been 12 months since gun owners in Australia were forced by a new law to surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed by our own
government, a program costing Australia taxpayers more than $500 million dollars."
"The first year results are now in:
Australia-wide, homicides are up 6.2 percent,
Australia-wide, assaults are up 9.6 percent;
Australia-wide, armed robberies are up 44 percent.
In the state of Victoria.....alone, homicides with firearms are now up 300 percent."
Just telling WRONG!!! is rather immature. If you have data that backs your position, present it. Otherwise you have only an opinion and they are like ass holes...
The thing that is conveniently forgotten whenever these apples to oranges comparisons crop up is that every culture is different. Whether crime is impacted is irrelevant since the people themselves are never factored in. Besides, I read an investigative report a while ago that proved Britain's supposed drop in violent crime was due to the police padding the numbers by calling assaults and other violent crimes something else. For instance, they would respond to a domestic violence call and then report it as a slip and fall accident. I cannot remember where I read this and I am admitting this so please do not try to call me a liar or a nut, these are not my "facts".
On the subject of guns specifically, there are more murders committed in America with hammers than guns but i don't hear anyone trying to disarm capenters.
Fucking idiots are the ones, like you, who refuse to accept any facts or opinion that differs from yours. Who in hell even said anything about hammers in Australia? Stay in Australia and shut the hell up and let the adults speak!
Guns are still legal in Australia, though, and people still own them (both legal and illegal). The fact that no mass shootings have occurred speaks more to the people of Australia than lack of guns or gun control laws.
My point. I'm not sure what exactly it says but it does come down to culture. There are more places on earth where this sort of thing happens, and even with more violence and frequency than just the USA, so if culture is the right word it's not only one culture. I know it's easy to blame media but sensational coverage of a tragedy makes it look cool if not all your cats are meowing to begin with.
Guest, though guns are still legal in Australia it is *extremely* hard to get a hold of one. To get a licence you need to pass many tests, and the only kind of guns actually available without being part of the army are generally hunting guns for game etc, so you can't obtain automatic or semi-automatic weapons. Yes, there are illegal guns around too, but there are less illegal guns on the street than you probably think. It's very difficult to actually get them into the country. Knife crimes, however, are much more common and happen all the time
Here's the big difference between America and Australia, Australia is an island, they can manage their borders a lot easier that the US which is bordered by Mexico, where a massive amount of illegal weapons are constantly crossing the border, both ways. It would make it a lot easier to get ahold of illegal weapons here in the US than in Australia.
People say "guns don't kill, people kill".
Yet what if last week's mass attack in America (there's one every week, so this sentence will stay correct indefinitely) had been carried out with slingshots and combat knives?
You can't fix the evilness of humanity; violence will always happen, so you might as well change the only factor you CAN fix, which is the availability of the weapons.
Just a cynical opinion from a cynical person.
good for Australia. except I don't think it's the gun control. Switzerland has the highest gun ownership and the one of the lowest crime rates. it's not guns, it's People
What about the people who actually *do* the crimes? Won't they find ways to get guns anyway? Like with drugs is kinda what I'm getting at. Even though they aren't legal, almost half the people I know do all sorts. I'm all for a stricter gun control. The way I see it, people who use guns for defense and to go shooting broken TV's in the desert (me) will be able to do so and people with mental issues (like insanity, suicidal thoughts, etc.. ya know?) won't get to purchase guns unless they got them from some guy selling illegally. Right?
whenever i see these kind of posts it is always a shitstorm in the comments about this topic. Why cant we all behave like good allies and We will just stick to eating vegimite and you stick to mac Donalds and we just this topic guys?? Although we want america to regulate gun laws better we just need to bud out OK LADS!?!?!
