it's actually comforting... in a very scary, too-big-to-understand-it way. the universe will forget everything we ever did including the fact that we ever existed so you really don't have to worry about that embarrasing thing you did 7 years ago because the universe doesn't give a fuck.
Doesn't just not give a fuck, the universe is actually actively trying to kill us all.
GRBs, solar flares, asteroids and comets, main sequence evolution to red giant... and if none of that gets us, there's the inevitable heat death which may or may not be preceded by a big rip.
.
Sleep tight kids!
To be fair, that shit is just going on; it isn't directed at us. If the universe were actively trying to kill us, we would be quite dead. You reminded me of one of my first college classes, the professor asked us to introduce ourselves with the usual stuff, but also say what our greatest fear was. I said GRBs.
Just because you are a small piece, doesn't mean you don't matter. Like I am not paying attention to my white blood cells, but if they weren't there, you better believe I would notice. Easy on the negativity kids.
While this is true, the part that fucks me up more is that we're basically the universe experiencing itself, so without us the universe might as well not even exist
GRBs, solar flares, asteroids and comets, main sequence evolution to red giant... and if none of that gets us, there's the inevitable heat death which may or may not be preceded by a big rip.
