I don't get the hate on ebooks. It's a lot cheaper to buy books online (I have a Nook). You also have access to all the books you've bought in one little device.
But it's such an impersonal experience--you don't hear the rustle of pages, smell the freshness of a new book, you can't feel the texture of the cover in your fingers and know that this book is yours and yours alone. It's just not the same.
Maybe for other people. But the feeling grows stale for me. In the end, I care about the the actual content of the book. Everything else doesn't matter to me.
Personally, I do not like electronic books. Here is my reasoning: the price does not matter to me. No I'm not rich or anything. In fact I'm a jobless teenager with no parental support. I like the thick feeling of a book as well. I never have to worry about someone stealing it because... It's like $20... nobody wants to steal that. I like the smell. I like to see all the books I have sitting on my shelf. It makes me feel proud. I like to organize my books, then re organize them differently. I like flipping pages. There's no glare on books. I like to need to keep them in good condition. That's why I'd rather a book over an electronic.
Plus, it's hard to have authors (or actors) autograph a Kindle or Nook. I personally have my copy of Return of the King autographed by Sean Astin, Billy Boyd, and John Rhys-Davies. I've got several different series that have been signed by their respective authors. E-books are convenient, but physical libraries will always have a certain majesty about them.
I feel they both have their benefits. Ebooks save space, but alot if the bigger titles are the same price as printed, at for the kindle. Bound books have the entire sensory experience, smell touch. Also their are some older, rarer titles you can't find on ebook.
I agree, with old books, it is all about the leather, the sweet musky odor, the crispness of the pages, and the sound of them turning that is tantamount to an old friend whispering words of wisdom.
I fought ebooks for all the reasons stated above for a long time. Now I almost exclusively read ebooks because I can read with the lights off, I can easily have multiple books with me, and I can get them instantly.
I love reading on my phone/tablet. Its so convenient to have a library in your pocket. But i also love "real" books. I love the scene of the paper, the sound as i turn the page, the feel of something that could last longer i would live. Both are amazing and i get different things from each. I do not prefer one over the other
Honestly, it's not so terrible to prefer printed books. Some people just like to be able to stack them, smell them, throw them at people, make tiny notes on the borders, whatever. And some people (like me) simply get burst cappilaries in their eyes after reading from a screen for too long.
Why is this even an issue? Some people like their coffee black and some put cream and sugar in it. What's the point bitching about others' preferences?
