why would a person be embarrased of making a honest living for themselves and their kids? what you said doesn't exactly make much sense to me.

Because in society jobs like being a lawyer or a doctor are held in more high regard then, say, a garbage man or manual labor worker. They're less educated, and that kind of work has always been done by the lower class in society. Back in the day that was peasant work. Jobs like lawyers and doctors etc are done by upper class people and people see them with more worth
