You can sometimes shade with pink to give your character a more "cute" look as it makes the base skin colour pop and look less grey. The artist used too much red thou but that's a pretty common mistake or as some would call it "style choice". I do agree with you nonetheles. With that kind of skin colour a more standard shading would fit better.
