Some do. My brother worked in a restaurant where the waiters had to share their tips with the bus boys. And another one where the tips had to be split 50% waiter 30% cook 20% bus boy.
I agree, but at the same time dishwashers are getting minimum wage (in my state it's 7.25) while the servers are getting a lot less (my state it's 2.13).
Exactamundo.
Not only are the kitchen staff getting paid more, most customers tip the server for the SERVICE. The kitchen staff are not serving the customers at the tables. Some restaurants do indeed force the servers to "tip out", that is to split their tips with kitchen staff or even make all the servers pool their tips and split them up evenly.
I absolutely refuse to patronize any restaurant that does this to its servers. If I tip my server for his/her good job taking care of me, I do so because I want him/her to have the tip, not others I never even saw. This practice also has the effect of lowering the level of service customers receive; if a server doesn't have to provide good service (or even any service at all) in order to receive tips because the others have to share, he will not even try. If a good server busts his ass to earn great tips and then has to give them to others who don't work as hard, he will eventually start slacking himself.
I have been dishwashing, and IMO that's the most exhausting job in a restaurant with the smallest paycheck. So yeah, definitely, tips should be split in equal parts for everyone working in the facking restaurant.
Even though you knew the job and what it paid before you took it? Even though you get paid twice what the servers are making or more? Even though you just run dishes through a machine and the servers are running around out front taking care of multiple customers, dealing with demanding assholes, keeping multiple orders and responsibilities straight, and kissing ass to earn whatever tips they get? No, you're right. You definitely deserve a portion of their tips.
Btw, ask a server what the most exhausting job in the restaurant is. Better yet, try waiting tables.
Before you claim I don't know what I'm talking about, I have worked literally EVERY position in a restaurant, from busboy to manager.
I think the restaurant should pay all thier employs enough, tipping is bullshit, i don't tip shit, and when asked why I tell them ask their damn boss why should I have to help his bottle line
yes please explain to me, why the fuck I should pay someone for doing their job,,,sorry but that is the responsbilty to the actual boss,,no need to explain I have family that work these bullshit jobs, it's a shame people can't place blame where it goes. sorry ass employers
It Hink instead of tipping every body we should just pay servers enough money. No other country tips. Also, I am a cook and I use to date a server at a restaurant I worked at. Use to piss me off how she would COME home after being at work for 4 hours and complain about only making 80-90 dollars that night. I'm sittin here like "bitch, that's half my paycheck in one night why are you complaining?!"
I was under the impression that tipping started in America during prohibition. People would pay the server more for bringing their food first and restaurant owners would tell them "yeah, take it, we're not making enough money to pay you so now you have to rely on tips" and it just continued. Maybe other countries tip servers but I don't think they have servers rely on tips solely as their main income
Servers in America do not rely solely on tips. They are paid a wage as well. The only thing is that minimum wage for employees that usually get tipped is lower than the minimum wage for other positions. This is only because most servers in most restaurants make more than that with their tips. If a server does not make at least full minimum wage with their tips, the restaurant pays them more to make up the difference, by federal law.
Americans generally are decent and generous people, and tip by choice out of gratitude for being taken care of, not out of pity because they don't think the server is getting paid. You cannot stop a customer from giving his server a little extra, so tips will always be a part of a server's day.

As a former waitress that had to work for tips and bussed her own tables and did her own dishes you can take that opinion and cram it up your ass
there were bus boys but hey didn't do nearly as much as the waitresses did, they don't deserve part of their hard earned money.
they do in the kitchen that I work at.. I believe everyone is a part of the team, and should get their share.. and for those wondering.. the servers at my work make minimum wage but still earn more money than the kitchen staff (except chef) including their tips
Yes a good server can make good money. That doesn't mean anyone else in the restaurant is entitled to some of it. Some jobs pay more than others. Get over it. If you want more money, change jobs or (gasp!) WORK HARDER!

Guestwho where are you, there is a person who needs to be enlightened?
Here, hold my beer while I get my shotgun!
