The state government of North Carolina passed a law, the media reported on it. If anybody is making trans rights an issue, it's NC and their backwards legislators.
It's only North Carolina? North Carolina started all this out of the blue for no reason? Obama and the media aren't stirring anything up? Several states aren't suing Obama over HIS ultimatum on trans bathrooms in public schools? Damn! I sure missed something here.
Interesting. So they've hired an Obama lookalike to give press conferences about it and no one, including Obama himself, noticed that it wasn't really him? Damn North Carolina is one sneaky sonofabitch!
It's a minor issue that certain groups suddenly decided to blow out of proportion for political gains, to make a point, or to show what good people they are. There will be another issue along shortly to overshadow this one.

Kinda like all those Turkish shop owners selling fake and faulty life vests to desperate Syrian refugees, just to make a quick buck? But hey yall, the trans community has really suffered and I bet this bathroom thing was a much higher priority that desperately needed our attention.
listen....trans people are constantly harassed by cis people when they use the bathrooms of the gender they identify as...many trans people dont feel comfortable using public bathrooms for fear of being abused, either verbally or physically..this really isnt a minor issue thats been 'blown out of proportion'
I've never heard of a situation like that happening ever unless it was someone who JUST started to transition so they still look like what they originally were
If I was Trans I would never give myself up like that going into a men's bathroom dressed as a women first of all. And how are you going to enforce this? Stand a police man in the bathroom..like miss please pull up your skirt so I can look at your genitals?
I don't honestly know about the last part, but i agree with the first. All of my catholic friends (I'm catholic) are getting worked up about it, but my mom just says, "theyve been doing it for years!!!"
Okay, so why label your personality type? Just because a girl likes video games and cars, and acts tough, she is trans? I don't see why it is necessary.
Nah, y'all are thinking of stuff like nonbinary and agender
Trans is backed by science and has more to do with the physical parts than with the stereotypes
"Trans is backed by science"
It's existence is backed by science, not it's legitimacy.
"and has more to do with the physical parts"
How do you identify with a body part? Especially one you don't have, so you can't possibly know what it's like to have one?
to zipthesilver - As soon a trans person can describe what it feels like to be a woman without using stereotypes, then I might consider believe then. Otherwise, they will continue to be men who like to wear dresses and I will not give into media hype and call them she/her, etc. I am woman and like sports, hate wearing dresses, only wear makeup if i'm dressing up, wear tennis shoes, etc.
You know you're trains if you have body dysphoria, e.g. Transmen hate having tits, being forced to wear a bra can make them break down and cry. They are desperate to get top surgery to get rid of them.
Why? They're not hurting anyone. Should people who get plastic surgery see a therapist? Also, not every trans person wants/needs to transition/have surgery.
From what I understand, if you are having sexual reassignment surgery, (which not all transgender people feel the need to do) therapy it is a requirement before they do the procedure. I also understand there is a certain amount of time you must live as the opposite sex. @zipthesilver I read an article from a transgendered person who put it like this, "If I would take a pill and change the understanding of how my body should look; I would. But science doesn't know how to recalibrate the brain, at this point in the medical world, so it's easier to fix the body."
And, If I'm wrong, or offended anyone that is not my intention and please correct me.
"live as the opposite sex"
What does that mean?
"change the understanding of how my body should look; I would. But science doesn't know how to recalibrate the brain,"
You can change your understanding of anything without "recalibrating" your brain.
"Live as the opposite sex"
If you are pursuing a sex change, as i understand, means you must live as if you already had the change. So, a man becoming a woman, must live as a woman for a certain amount of time, while also attending therapy.
What the person in the article was saying is that they had been through years of therapy, and after all that time, they still felt as if their penis was not part of them; it never was part of them and should have never been a part of them. The only example I can think of, is where a person goes into hospital wanting an appendage amputated because "it doesn't feel like it's part of them." Also, we know a lot about the body, however the brain is still a mystery. Changing your understanding of something over simplifies the problem, sexual identity is more complex because it is part of the overall perception that people have of you and how you even view the world. Thus "recalibration of the brain" to accepted the sex you have at birth.
Let's try another way. First, I am not trying to argue one way or another, but I am trying to understand it: on a human level and scientific one. When I said they see a therapist, I assumed that it implied there is mental component to sexual reassignment surgery. So I'll be blunt, yes there is a mental component but the brain is more complex than the body. From what I have read no one been able to "fix" it mentally. Meaning, at this point, no amount of talk sessions, or pill combination will make someone who is transgender feel comfortable in their own skin (recalibration of the brain through therapy or medication). So, the only other option, is to fix the body. Science is still researching it, but there is a theory that it has something to do with hormone levels during pregnancy, which disrupts the brains relation between it's natural sex and the sex of the body.
@zipthesilver@garlog there are studies that show transsexuals have the same brain structure as the gender they are transitioning to. Plus, when you say that transsexuality is not legitimate or real, you are basically saying, 'my virtually nonexistent understanding of this disorder and my basic biology better equips me to talk about it than hundreds of doctors, psychologists, and surgeons who are far more qualified than me, and who have done far more work in this area'.
@illjusthavewater
"you must live as if you already had the change"
Says who?
"felt as if their penis was not part of them"
What does that mean?
"sexual identity is more complex"
Transgender stuff is an issue of gender identity, not sexual identity isn't it?
"So, the only other option, is to fix the body."
Statistically it doesn't seem to reduce suicide rates or increase overall happiness, so that's at least debatable.
Also those are honest questions, and it's fine if you don't know the answers, I'm all for figuring out more about this too.
@supbros
"there are studies that show transsexuals have the same brain structure as the gender they are transitioning to. "
There are studies that *suggest* that there are *similarities* between them.
"my virtually nonexistent understanding of this disorder and my basic biology better equips me to talk about it than hundreds of doctors, psychologists, and surgeons who are far more qualified than me, and who have done far more work in this area"
But there are doctors and psychologists that don't agree as well.
>Yeah, the thing about sexual identity is wrong, it's gender.
>I think the thing about living as if you had had the change is to make sure that you will be happy in everyday life, to make sure it's the right choice- as you say, this is indeed pretty abstract.
>I'm p sure it does reduce suicide rates? At the very least I know that familial support of trains children dramatically decreases suicide and mental illness rates.
>the dick thing is hard to explain. I guess it's like you'd forget it was there, and then you remember that it is, and when you do you feel like shit. I'm not sure though, I think it's to do with disassociation.
Honestly, I'm not the best person to ask, I think something that helped me understand was this from YouTuber therealalexbertie. Some of his old videos titled stuff like, 'dysphoria' really displays the awful pain, and he does seem to have become much happier over the years as he's learnt to pass more.

How about seeing a therapist instead of a doctor?
