However, it did require some finagling to make it work. The board itself didn't work. The life jackets needed to be put under it.

I remember this episode too. They said that just a door on its own in the water like it would have been in the movie would have sunk once they were both "on top" enough to keep them from freezing. They had to use things that wouldn't have necessarily been floating around to make it work. I think they actually said "James Cameron got the physics of it pretty much exactly right." ...or something to that effect.
