No, you made an unfounded poorly supported statement. I could just as well say, "I think I could be counted as the first person to bang your mom". Wouldn't really make it true. Or would it?
I meant he was more of a mass murderer than a serial killer. And I also meant in America not in general. And you're just supporting my other statement of you being an asshat because you have clearly grasped what I was meaning
These guys get it. We are being told that we should be ashamed today for what our ancestors did in the past. Some how the people of today need to make good for what the people in the past did.
We should all just move back to Africa.
I've never actually heard anyone blame Europeans or shame people because of Christopher Columbus, "Native islanders who didn’t collect enough gold could have their hands cut off, and rebel Spanish colonists were executed at the gallows. Colonists complained to the monarchy about mismanagement, and a royal commissioner dispatched to Hispaniola arrested Columbus in August 1500 and brought him back to Spain in chains." this is why people hate Columbus, not because they think that "colonialism was the worst thing ever". http://www.history.com/news/10-things-you-may-not-know-about-christopher-columbus
Word.^ yeah, @famouseone and @heywood, asking people to be ashamed of themselves for their ancestors' actions that they had absolutely no control over is pointless and unhelpful. But I think the bigger problem folks are pointing out about Columbus is that he's venerated as a hero in America today although he did rape, kill, subjugate, and enslave the people already living on the continent before he arrived. Also, the way he is often portrayed fits in with this whole "the Americas were useless and undiscovered until white people arrived" narrative, which is both historically false and really insulting. Basically, people are asking for more accurate representations of history rather than blind hero worship of a guy who did make a huge impact on the world as we know it but also did some pretty fucked up shit once he got where he was going. Historical Correctness. As in actual facts.
Straight up.^Yeah, accurate representation of historical events doesn't seem that much to be asking for. Fun fact:Columbus only really got popular in the United States when he did was because, it was during the time that Italian immigrants who came to the Untied States were being hardcore discriminated against. So then the Italian community used Christopher Columbus and put him in this really good view of how he was a great explorer and Italian. So him getting popular was good but only for back then though because Italians aren't still being discriminated against.
Not to cause anything, but when Columbus went to America and all the kings they made the continent to modernise to European level and to become a great source of money. In South America there used to be a lot of gold which the Spanish Kings took all of it, that lead to a huge economic crisis and to the different countries in SA to become independent, and people in these countries are still saying that we took their gold. I know that Columbus could have been much better but it also made America to be discovered and to become a part of the World, so not everything is bad
Yeah I know he wasn't all bad. He was kind of the one that started the Columbian Exchange, which was a really good thing (besides disease spread) and helped spread more ideas, food, and technology throughout the world. I just think it's dumb when people refuse to acknowledge the bad he has also done. He's not necessarily a strictly good or bad person in my opinion, but he has done good and bad things.
