They should be.
On December 27th, 2004 a burst of energy from Magnetar SGR 1806-20 wreaked a little bit of havoc on Earth.
It was detected by the then newly launched Swift satellite, the energy instead passing through the side of the craft and it still overwhelmed the cameras.
Several other satellites were knocked out, it ionized the upper atmosphere and it made Earth's magnetic field ring like a bell.
Oh and I almost forgot... SGR 1806-20 did this from a distance of 50,000 lightyears, on the other side of the galactic core.
