What the hell is poly? Does that mean you date multiple people at once? Let me call my girl and tell her it's okay, I'm not a cheater, I'm just poly.

The ignorance here is rather baffling. Look it up instead of showing off your stupidity, mate.

It doesn't mean that you can cheat. All parties have to consent, and it's like having a friend group, but romantically.

Do ya really expect anything besides ignorance from guests?

We need to teach them. If they refuse to be taught, then we must teach harder.

Okay. Sorry, but after reading everyone's comments I still don't get what it is. Can someone please kindly explain?

It's basically that you can date lots of people at once and everyone knows so it's not the same as cheating.

geluregis

But all the people are also dating eachother

That only applies to some poly relationships.

So...it's a harem
1
nightshadecat

No... it's a consensual romantic relation between more than two people (as far as my understanding goes)

chu

So...a classic anime harem.

No its stupid to be in a relationship with more then one person because someone is going to end up getting hurt. It's stupid to do something when you know it's going to hurt someone.
▼
rosebud
...not if all of the people know of, and are accepting of, all the relationships going on. you clearly don't understand the matter.

hellsbells

No I understand it's just fucking stupid. In every relationship there's drama and the more people you add the more drama there will be you can't expect someone not to get hurt in a type of relationship like that. People who want more then one person in a relationship can't handle a true relationship.

Can you have more than one friend?
5
hellsbells

I don't fuck my friends and we are not all in a relationship

The sex is irrelevant to a relationship.
1
chu

Unless the relationship is centered around sex then it's called fuck buddies but in an otherwise romantic/platonic relationship the sex is irrelevant in polyamory. It just means multiple loves.
2
hellsbells
In a relationship you want to make love so it shouldn't be irrelevant
▼
chu
Not necessarily. Love is just an extension of friendship.

rosebud

Two spouses are very good friends.

I agree with chu and banana, I'm polyamorous and it is the same thing; you can have multiple friends, therefore you can have multiple lovers.
4
hellsbells

I respect your beliefs but why would you want to be with more then one person. I love my husband and I couldn't imagine loving someone else the way I love him
▼
geluregis
I couldn't ever imagine loving a woman. But what do I know about others?
4
captain_sparrow

Hellsbells it's very true, I wouldn't love someone else the way I love another and that's the point, love occurs in different ways. Geluregis since I'm bisexual polyamoroury makes sense to me also
3
rosebud
And because I'm also bisexual, polyamory seems like a normal thing to me. I just wouldn't engage in it.
4
chu
I feel like polyamory is dependent on the same factors that getting a single relationship depends on, except even more so because you'll have to find multiple people you love as well as their understanding of your situation.
5
rosebud
And they all agree on being in a relationship. That's the entire point. There's no cheating on it if everyone already knows about it.
5
chu
For the record, I disagree with poly but I respect them.
3
rosebud
That's my stance.
3
nightshadecat
Yeah. Like, I don't think I could be in a poly relationship but it's fine if others do.

I've always admired poly relationships, how you can keep the trust and bond between three or more people is so cool, when I can't even keep it with one person lol

Poly isn't easy, but what relationship is? Everyone gets hurt no matter how many people are in it, we grow up, grow apart, break up and move on. Being in a relationship where a need could never be met by one person and ignoring that need for the sake of being with "one person" is just as hurtful. The key to a successful relationship(s) is being upfront, with others as well as yourself, and communicating those needs with everyone involved. If poly isn't your thing, find a partner who agrees, just don't go bashing someone else's relationship because you can't wrap your head around it.
