Psssht. Everyone makes mistakes and besides, there are so many variations and dialects that any standard is to some degree arbitrary. And besides, language evolves with culture and besides *that*, it's boring when everyone is the same. There's so much flavour out there, why limit ourselves?
if pepl r tlkin lik dis nd its der ntiv lnguag, that's a problem.
It's not "limiting ourselves", it's speaking with normal English…you act like talking is some sort of art or form. it's not. it's communicating with someone else. there's no skill to it.
While MLK, Hemingway, fucking JK, or anyone else out there may be famous, I stand by what I said. There's nothing special to speech. I'm talking about the way they said it. I respect MLK's actions, ideas, and morals, but the way that he physically conveyed those to the Afro-American and Caucasian groups in the 1950s and 1960s don't strike a chord with me like they apparently do to you.
Yeah... I'm surprised. I think some people are far more persuasive than others, precisely because of their ability to express themselves well. MLK was known as a brilliant orator because he could paint the most elevating ideas in speech like music - fame has nothing to do with it. With respect, I think you're underestimating the power of language.
@willfree have you ever actually READ Hemingway? He was an unbearable pompous ass who loved to hear himself talk, or see himself write, and really just made shit up! Art? Hemingway? Just fucking shoot me now.
I've read Hemingway, yes, and I have nothing but respect/admiration/mad jealousy for his use of language. I gather he was a pretty unpleasant human being, but as an artisan of wordcraft I think few can match him.
I wasn't born in a english-speaking country (I speak Spanish), but I can relate to what the OP is saying... and I can also relate to the fact if I can speak or write better English than most native speakers... we have a problem. At the same time, I would blame the education systems. You see, I had to learn the language completely from the bottom up; every piece of grammar and sentence structure learned from scratch. A lot of the time in middle school and high school, language art classes were too lenient with students and weren't a full requirement to graduate (I mean this in the sense that you can pass with a 50% average, every year).
@willfree Of course I didn't know him, but his writing style is like itching powder in my jock strap. What he did was to just vomit words onto the pages, and when he was done he would go back over the story and edit out everything he felt was extraneous, leaving what was usually a choppy story. Reading him in English class was painful.
Of course this is just my opinion and I'm not faulting your appreciation of his work.
Seriously, people tend to make fun of people who speak a language badly, but this is true, they are bilingual, not at all stupid as some make it seem. I take Gloria from Modern Family as an example, I think she even said it sometime, she's latina and is slow to respond and understand cause she has to translate everything in her head first, not because she is an ignorant.

Am I allowed to be a grammar nazi if English isn't my first language?
