In Canada, we have big lockers to store our heavy coats & boots during winter. I don't know about the southern U.S., but I always thought the northern states have them for this reason too.

My locker was quite small. I could only store my jacket and PE clothes in there. And if I really stuffed I could put in 2 or 3 books in them as well
