Similiar to a herd of deer which lived confined in an electric fence. The deer taught their children to not cross the spot where the fence was, and when the fence was removed, the deer didn't cross it. Their parents were dead, and the deer had never experienced the electric shock of the fence. They still didn't cross.

You can actually see the fence to the sides if you look closely, look for the shadows of the posts. It makes sense that it is more visible in the area where the gate is as it would be more reinforced in a place where there are lots of sheep pushing through it.
