Grimreaper I agree that it makes it worse. It raises your anxiety because you know the teacher likes to call on you, instead of choosing to answer or not.
In my case, at least, it did the opposite. My teachers were really aggressive in it and even if my work surpassed my peers I would get a lower grade due to participation ( they would tell me this, I'm not just guessing )
And whenever I would try to participate people would think i was weird cause I was the shy loner kid and they would always shoot down at idea I had an pretty much ignore any contribution I made, a couple times even going so far as to completely take off my part of the project and taking my name off, and the teachers just told me to deal with it, but still pushed me to participate with repurcussions if I didn't.
So while it might have the purpose of helping you, most teachers do it horribly wrong and just make the shy kids MORE shy and reserved and hesitant to put themselves out there.
