He is a brilliant man, with great ideas and putting his own money into making sure those are developed - so fantastic and such, but while there are small things like this where it is a kindness and good publicity he is apparently as unreasonably demanding of his employees as he is of himself. I support the drive for progress fast but if you burn out the best and brightest (himself included) there are repercussions.
Maybe this is just the cynic in me, but the amount of positive publicity you get from providing free repairs in a case like this is easily worth the cost of repairing a single vehicle. No question. It's a steal.

My point is that I really can't conclude from this evidence alone that Elon Musk is a genuinely kind, giving person, because his action has such obvious business benefits. The most selfish person in the world would do something like this.
