Alternatively, "Hmm... This part of the lake is missing something... I know! I'll make a creepy statue and put it right there to freak everyone out."

What if the person was so creeped out by their creation that they put it at the bottom of the swamp but slowly the statue has gained strength from the other swamp creatures souls and now it's coming to get its creator?
