No they are allowed, but only where there is no/minimal risk of harming civilians. But for clearing out a forest or a enemy encampment then it is allowed.
I have attended many classes concerning the Geneva Convention, specifically how it relates to combat engagements and this is a new one to me. The use of flame throwers and napalm weren't covered, nor was that bug bear about the .50 cal.
