Legit question for American fsers: are high school cheerleaders and jocks really such a big deal like it's shown in so many movies/series? I mean, them being massively popular and sometimes bullying the "nerds" – is it a thing or are the movies just extremely exaggerated?
Most of the time students who pursue extra curricular activities ARE the over achievers. As a student athlete I participated in 3 varsity sports and sat at the top of my class all the way til graduation. The same could be said for most others, though not all football players...
It's exxagerated. I go to a private school that's only known for their athletics and recruits athletes (in fucking high school). Like 90% of the students do at least one sport. I don't do any sports and it's no like that. Nothing beyond my friends jokingly calling me lazy. You can definitely gain a lot of popularity by being a football or basketball player though.
Playing sports and being a cheerleader definitely helps you be more popular but in my experience it's extremely exaggerated. The jocks/popular people are usually pretty nice and the majority of them make very good grades. Its actually the unpopular people who are the slackers and who have a lot of drama (in my school at least)
